Search San Miguel Court Records
The first public search path is New Mexico Courts Case Lookup. The system opens with a disclaimer before the user reaches the search form. It is meant for viewing individual electronic court records, not for bulk collection. The disclaimer also points to NMSA 1978, Section 14-3-15.1, and tells users to notify the court where the case was heard if the displayed details do not match the case particulars.
After accepting the disclaimer, the Case Lookup application supports name, driver-license, date-of-birth, case-number, court-type, location, case-category, filing-date, and hearing-date filters. San Miguel County users can narrow District Court matters to Las Vegas location 412, Magistrate Court matters to Las Vegas location 48, and municipal matters to Las Vegas or Pecos when those options apply.

That disclaimer matters because it defines the public search as individual record access, not a download tool for many cases.
- Open Case Lookup and accept the disclaimer if the intended use is individual record review.
- Enter a party name in Last First Middle order, or use driver license and date-of-birth details when known.
- Limit the search by court type and Las Vegas location when the court level is known.
- Use filing-date or hearing-date ranges when the name is common or the approximate case period is known.
- Review the result, then contact the court of record or use re:SearchNM if documents or certified copies are needed.

The form is useful for San Miguel County court records because it combines name search, court type, local court location, and date limits in one place.
San Miguel Record Access Channels
Case Lookup is not the only channel. New Mexico Courts also provides Odyssey Public Access, a separate public landing page for case records, and re:SearchNM, a registration-required court-records portal. The state self-help material says re:SearchNM gives registered users access to Odyssey case information and documents by user profile, including civil, criminal, family, and probate case information from appellate, district, magistrate, and metropolitan courts.
Use the online paths in layers. Case Lookup is best for free public case metadata and docket-style information. Odyssey Public Access is another state court entry point. re:SearchNM is the better fit when document access is needed and the user's profile allows it. If the online record is old, incomplete, restricted, or inaccurate, the next step is the specific court where the case was heard.

Odyssey is part of the broader state case-record environment, so it belongs in the fallback chain with Case Lookup and re:SearchNM.

Registration and user-profile limits are important because document access is not the same as a free public name search.
San Miguel Case Lookup Fields
The Case Lookup form is more useful when the search is narrowed. A broad party-name search can return unrelated people, especially when a name is common. Court type, local court location, date of birth, and date range filters help separate a San Miguel County District Court case from a Magistrate Court or Municipal Court matter. The form also allows a case-number filter when the court type, location, and case-category code are known.

Types of San Miguel Court Records
San Miguel County court records come from several court levels. District Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court for civil claims, felony criminal cases, domestic relations, juvenile matters, mental health matters, lower-court appeals, and contested estates. Magistrate Court handles limited civil claims, landlord-tenant cases, felony preliminary hearings, misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, and traffic violations. Municipal Court handles municipal ordinance, petty misdemeanor, DWI/DUI, and traffic matters without jury trials. Probate Court handles informal and uncontested estates, while contested estate disputes move to District Court.
County clerk recorded documents are different from court case files. Deeds, mortgages, liens, UCC filings, marriage records, and recorded county documents are maintained by the elected San Miguel County Clerk, not the court clerk function. If a requested record is held by county government rather than the courts, the county public-records request form or County Clerk channel is the correct fallback.

What San Miguel Records Show
A court record is not one fixed document. It may be a search result, a docket entry, a scanned pleading, a court order, a financial entry, or a certified copy. Public systems often show less than the full file. A certified copy from the court is still the safer choice when a record must be used for a legal, licensing, immigration, employment, or agency purpose.

San Miguel Public Access Rules
The statewide New Mexico Courts public records page ties together IPRA, Case Lookup, and re:SearchNM. For court records, Rule 1-079 NMRA treats most court records as public unless a rule, statute, or court order limits access. For county-held records, the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act gives a right to inspect public records unless an exception applies. Agencies do not have to create a new record just because a requester asks for information in a new format.
San Miguel County has a separate county public-records request form for county-held records. The form asks the requester to describe the records with reasonable particularity and submit the completed request to the SMC Manager's Office at 500 W. National Ave., Suite 201, Las Vegas, NM 87701. It also states that copying charges are $1.00 per page and that copy fees may be required before copies are made. That county form is not a substitute for a court-certified case copy, but it is important for county records outside the judiciary.

Restricted San Miguel Court Records
Public access does not mean every file can be viewed by anyone. Juvenile records are not ordinary public court records. Adoption case materials are confidential or restricted. Mental health proceedings and medical information receive special protection. Personal identifiers such as Social Security numbers, financial account details, protected medical data, and minor names may be redacted from public documents.
Sealed records require a legal basis. Rule 1-079 does not allow parties to make a record sealed merely by agreement. Expunged records are also different from ordinary public case records. New Mexico's Criminal Record Expungement Act, effective January 1, 2020, allows eligible arrest or criminal records to be removed from routine public access after the court process is complete. Federal and tribal records are outside that state expungement process.

San Miguel Court Record Requests
When online search is not enough, contact the court or office that holds the record. District Court records and certified court copies route through the San Miguel County District Courthouse. Magistrate Court matters route through the Magistrate Courthouse. County-held records route through San Miguel County's public-records request process or the County Clerk when the record is a recorded document, marriage record, UCC filing, lien, deed, or similar county clerk record.
